City leaders discuss city budget

City leaders met to discuss the city’s budget for fiscal year 2017-2018 in a two-part round-table discussion open to the public.

The first of three meetings was held Tuesday at city hall. City officials talked about property taxes, current and future revenue projects, expenditure increases and personnel recommendations.

Leaders say this is a way for city employees to get a good picture of where the city is heading for the upcoming year.

“This is just prelim, we’re going to have some suggestions on what we think individually as the councilmen and as a council member. How we should go, how we should proceed and you’re going to get to see basically where each of us stand as far as the budget goes,” said Councilman Edward Thomas.

Originally there were three meetings scheduled but officials canceled Wednesday’s meeting.

The next meeting is Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at city hall.

City officials say they hope to have a finalized budget ready by June.
