Firefighters respond to small house fire

Brawley Firefighters responded to a small house in the 600 block of First Street this morning. Two people were in the house during the time of the fire but fortunately no one was hurt.

We spoke to family members on scene earlier today who did not want to speak on camera but did confirm an elderly man was in the house at the time of the fire.

“First engine company arrived, found heavy fire and smoke spewing, they did an initial attack, they were able to confine the fire to one bedroom,” said Chief Chuck Peraza of Brawley Fire Department.

Though the fire was minimized most of the house did sustain smoke damage. Officials also ruled out weather as a factor and stressed the importance of smoke alarms.

“The number one thing for all residential homes is your smoke alarms. Smoke alarms of course alert you to any type of smoke in the house and fire especially after hours when were in bed,” explained Peraza.

Chief Peraza says it’s important check the batteries in your smoke alarms at least twice a year.

“The most important thing is to definitely get out and call 9-1-1 so we can come in and extinguish the fire,” added Peraza.

The reason to how the fire started is still under investigation at this time. The fire chief also stressed that it is import to check the smoke alarms of elderly loved ones.
