Television crews film scifi series at Imperial Sand Dunes

A film crew was in the Desert Southwest on Wednesday filming scenes for an upcoming television series. The digital series called “Deep Six” was inspired by science fiction films such as “Star Wars.” Film crews made out from Canada to imitate a scene that supposedly took place in another planet. The director of the series said it’s a unique show because of his personal connection to the desert. “The landscape of this area inspired this scene entirely,” Davin Lengyel said. “When I was a kid, I came out when they were filming ‘Return of the Jedi,’ so I’ve [always] had this image of a spaceship crash out in the desert for my entire life ever since I was eight years old.” Along with a crew of photographers and actors, Lengyel said he received help from local experts as well. Jeff Auricchio, a local cinematographer, said he was drawn to help out crews because of his passion for science fiction. “I really love the concept,” Auricchio said. “I’m kind of a science fiction nerd myself so any chance to get on a sci-fi set I’m going to jump on it.” While the series is not yet ready to the public, Lengyel said the experience of shooting the series has fulfilled his childhood dreams. “It’s always been a pleasure to come back to Yuma, Arizona,” Lengyel said. “It’s been such a dream to shoot something here and here we are.”
