Emily Gregory, a Democrat from Florida, celebrates flipping State House seat

(CBS, KYMA) - Emily Gregory, a Democrat, was seen celebrating with supporters after she won a special election for the Florida House of Representatives, flipping a seat in the district that is home to President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence.

Video taken by a supporter at a victory party Tuesday shows a crowd in North Palm Beach cheering for Gregory as she jumps up and down in celebration.

The footage also shows her giving a speech.

"Nobody thought it was possible," she said. "They thought we were crazy. But I knew my community…we deserve better."

The Associated Press reported Gregory was in the lead by 2.4 percentage points, or 797 votes, with almost all of the votes counted, beating Republican Jon Maples to represent the 87th District.

She fills a seat Republican Mike Caruso left vacant in August, when he left for an appointed job as Palm Beach County Clerk and Comptroller, according to the website Florida Politics.
