Federal appeals court maintains block on mass layoffs
(CNN, KYMA/KECY) - President Donald Trump's push to shrink the federal government has hit yet another legal roadblock.
A federal appeals court has denied the Trump Administration's request to move forward with plans to effectively shut down the Department of Education.
The First Circuit Court ruled that the administration failed to prove it could lawfully carry out mass layoffs without impairing the department's core functions; like distributing school aid and enforcing civil rights laws.
The ruling supports a lower court's order to reinstate employees, saying only Congress has the authority to dismantle a federal agency.
