Pakistan’s ex-PM Imran Khan arrested, sparking violence

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested and dragged from an Islamabad court as he appeared there to face charges in multiple graft cases, a dramatic escalation of political tensions that sparked violent demonstrations by his supporters in major cities. At least one person was killed and over a dozen injured in clashes between protesters and security forces. Amid the violence, social media was blocked and internet service was suspended in Islamabad and other cities. Khan was ousted in a no-confidence vote in 2022. His arrest was based on a a new warrant from the National Accountability Bureau obtained last week in a separate graft case. He is scheduled to appear at a tribunal Wednesday.
