Yuma CBP hits 300,000 apprehensions in last year

YUMA, ARIZ. (KECY, KYMA) - Local border patrol agents have now recorded over 300,000 migrant apprehensions this year.
Helping the Yuma sector eclipse 300,000 apprehensions in the last 12 months.
The vast majority of those apprehensions in this sector have been “give-ups.”
Migrants who cross the border illegally, but willingly turn themselves in to border patrol to make an asylum claim.
Marta Cecilia is one of the migrants giving herself up to border patrol on Thursday morning.
After a long and dangerous journey from Cali, Colombia.
“We had to go through Mexico and Mexican immigration and they take your money. And then did not give me the opportunity to ask for humanitarian support when I needed it,” Cecilia said.
Even though migrants illegally cross the border they have a legal right to claim asylum in the U.S. under existing immigration law.
“I am seeking asylum because I am a victim of armed conflict, and I had to leave the country with my two children,” Cecilia said.
A final count for the 2022 fiscal year will likely come in mid-October.
