AWC hosts town hall with local legislators

FOX 9's Adam Klepp spoke to lawmakers who highlighted how this year's budget helps Yuma

YUMA, Ariz. (KECY, KYMA) - Local lawmakers who represent Yuma County in the state government gathered for a town hall today hosted by Arizona Western College (AWC).

Both local Democrat and Republican lawmakers highlighted what they call major accomplishments in Arizona's bipartisan budget.

“We invested over a billion dollars in finding new water," Republican State Senator Sine Kerr said.

“Cesar Chavez boulevard expansion, Highway 95 to YPG expansion, we’re almost complete expanding it and we’re going to keep working on that,” Democrat State Representative Brian Fernandez said.

“A billion dollars in paying down debt, another billion for roads, hundreds of millions in tax cuts, it was an unprecedented budget,” Republican Representative Tim Dunn said.

AWC President Dr. Daniel Corr says the college received millions in valuable funding in the new budget as well.

Helping improve the campus, and add more programs to the curriculum.

“The law enforcement training program…we’re getting a new building thanks to money from the governor’s office. We’re expanding out manufacturing and adding google it services," Corr said.

Senator Kerr says she was happy to fund those programs, helping Yuma students find their passions so businesses can fill open jobs.

“Ror the students who don’t want to take the traditional university path this is a great opportunity,” Kerr said.

Representative Dunn says local ag businesses were specifically helped by the tax cuts.

“We eliminated the new sales tax on ag equipment which will help our local farmers,” Dunn said.

Dr. Corr says he was excited to bring this conversation to the community and put AWC in front of local legislators.

“It's a great day to be a Matador,” Corr said.
