Southwest High School receives alarming social media post

EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - In the early evening hours of Tuesday, September 27, officials at Southwest High School became aware of a social media post.

Accordingly, the post mentioned someone would take a weapon to school.

However, there was not a direct threat to any students or staff.

El Centro PD responds

Once notified, the El Centro PD took the post seriously and teamed up with the Department of Homeland Security Investigations.

From there, the two police agencies were able to identify the post's author.

Once the juvenile suspect was in custody, the suspect confessed that the post was a prank.

Not only that, he never intended to harm anyone.

Interestingly, the suspect does not reside in Imperial County nor does he attend the local schools.

Conclusion

Through a collaboration with Homeland Security and school officials and an extensive investigation, the El Centro PD determined no immediate threat.

However, the El Centro PD and Central Union High School District (CUHSD) takes these threats seriously.

The safety of students and the community are the El Centro PD and the CUHSD's number one priority.

Furthermore, they mention that individuals responsible for threats and posts will be identified and prosecuted.
