DHS: Plans in place to complete a “small gap” of the border wall in Yuma

YUMA, Ariz. (KECY, KYMA) - Efforts to fill in gaps in the Yuma Border wall have received bipartisan support, and now the Department of Homeland Security says they’re moving forward with plans to complete a section of the wall in the Yuma Sector.

According to a press release, Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas authorized Customs and Border Protection to move forward with various projects across the entire border, including “closing a small gap in the Yuma Sector”.

However, it remains unclear which gap they are talking about, or if they plan to fill in all the gaps near the Morelos Dam.

As there are multiple small portions of unfinished wall between County 8th and 9th Street.

Mayor Nicholls recently told KYMA he expects construction to begin this fall.

As for recent crossing activity, volunteers for the Arizona/California Humanitarian Coalition say they’ve seen a drop in border activity this week.

"I would say over the last few days the numbers have been lower than normal. I see it as a positive, it allows our area, our shelters, to ramp up, make some changes, and take a little bit of a breather,” Fernie Quiroz said.

In April, there were over 27,000 in the Yuma Sector according to Border Patrol, the third most of the nine southern border sectors.
