Suicide bombing kills 56 at Shiite mosque in Pakistan, injures 194

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (KYMA, KECY/AP) - Pakistani police say at least 56 people are dead following a suicide bomber who attacked inside of Shiite Muslim mosque in the northwestern city of Peshawar.

About 194 individuals are critically injured.

Police say the attack began after an armed assailant opened fire on policemen outside of the mosque.

No militant group claimed responsibility for the attack.

One police officer was wounded and another was killed in the gunfight.

The attacker ran inside the mosque after the gunfight and discharged his suicide vest.

According to police, the explosion happened as congregants gathered for Friday prayers.
