Border Patrol finds ultra-light aircraft from Mexico

U.S. Border Patrol agents found an ultra-light aircraft that had crashed near the Salton Sea.

Agents say they first saw the aircraft when it flew over the U.S.-Mexico border at around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night.

The pilot was in violation of Federal Aviation Administration regulations by not having lights while flying over U.S. air space, according the agents.

The aircraft was tracked and found near Salton City by Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine agents at about 8:20 a.m. on Thursday.

Border Patrol agents got there shortly after but were not able to find the pilot.

“These ultra-light aircrafts are extremely dangerous to legitimate air traffic,” said Assistant Chief Patrol Agent, David S. Kim, “We urge the community to call 911 if they see or hear one at night since it’s illegal to operate during hours of darkness and could cause a catastrophic accident with other aircraft.”

No drugs or other contraband were found in or near the aircraft according to agents.
