Phoenix-area solar cooperative boosts battery storage

The future of solar power is looking bright in the Phoenix area.

One of the city’s utility cooperatives now has plans to boost its solar battery storage. That means it can boost the number of homes it powers with sunlight.

Salt River Project ( SRP ) announced Friday it plans to build a new megawatt project near Buckeye called the Sonoran Energy Center. The facility should be complete by 2023.

A single megawatt could supply power to as many as 250 homes at one time. The new energy center is expected to generate as much as 250 megawatts. That could power tens of thousands of homes and businesses.

SRP executives says improved solar storage facilities will lower customers’ power bills. They say similar plants will also lower carbon emissions, provide clean energy to customers, and optimize energy output.
