Local barber gives haircuts to kids with cancer

The Bailando Por un Sueño dance competition is just two days away. Dancers will be raising funds for six local kids who have cancer. A local barber in Imperial is helping out the families of the competition by giving them a haircut to help them look and feel their best.

“My grandma for instance, I lost her when I was 12 to cancer,” said Raul Ortiz, barber and owner of 90s Barber Studio in Imperial.

Ortiz said losing his grandma to cancer wasn’t easy. He said, she had a giving heart, and she taught him to do the same.

The six kids participating in Bailando Por Un Sueño have all experienced hair loss as a result of their chemotherapy treatment.

” Growing up I used to cut my own hair, I used to mess myself up all the time. I know what it’s like when people are looking at you weird cause you don’t have hair or you have patches in your hair. It messes with your self-esteem. That’s why I want to give back because I know what that feels like, ” said Ortiz.

Today was a special day for 3-year-old Ramon Torres. He received his first haircut since his hair grew back.

” The fact that he even has hair and that he’s able to get a haircut, it’s so beautiful to us. It means a lot. When his hair was falling off we made the tough decision to cut all of his hair because it was horrible to see his hair falling out in clumps ,and falling in his food, ” said Veronica Torres.

Andre Escobar, participant of Bailando por un Sueño , says he’s one of the lucky ones because his hair grows fast, but seeing his hair fall out daily is rough.

“When I take a shower all the water gets in my head and when I dry myself you can see on the towel all the hair that came out,” said Andre.

” It’s incredible, that they care for us like this. We are so focused on his treatment and having to go to the hospital in San Diego, we’re not able to get haircuts like this, ” said Marisol Escobar, Andre’s Mom.

Bailando por un Sueño’s dance competition will take place Friday night at Cheval Farms in Imperial.
