Search for suspect in South Carolina after school bus stop shooting

GAFFNEY, S.C. (NBC, KYMA) - A search effort is underway Thursday in Gaffney, South Carolina for a second suspect connected to Wednesday's fatal school bus stop shooting.

One person was taken into custody Wednesday night, but no details have yet been released concerning his identity.

Law enforcement officials are combing an area near a lake Thursday looking for another a second suspect in the shooting.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler confirmed a Gaffney High School student was shot and killed when he was about to board a school bus Wednesday morning.

He went on to say the suspect, a man, approached the victim and after an altercation, fired a shot and then fled the scene.

At least one road is blocked today as the search continues in an area two to three miles from Grassy Pond Elementary School.

That school was placed under heightened security Thursday as a precaution during the search.

Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller confirmed one person was in custody, and a second suspect is being sought.
