Cyclosporiasis outbreak causing explosive diarrhea

(NBC, KYMA) - Health departments across the midwest are tracking an outbreak of cyclosporiasis, causing explosive diarrhea.

The CDC says there is no known link to the spike in cases nationwide. Some states are seeing more than 700 cases. Past outbreaks have been linked to produce like raspberries, cilantro and snowpeas contaminated with feces.

"It's just a reminder to make sure you're washing your vegetables, your fruits and vegetables really, really well," said Registered Nurse Melissa McMasters.

McMasters says cyclosporiasis symptoms can linger for a month or more.

Health officials say, if you are currently experiencing symptoms, you need to start an antibiotic right away.
