Rep. Ruiz calls for support for families of fallen officers

House of Representatives

WASHINGTON (KYMA) - Congressman Raul Ruiz, M.D. (CA-25) called for a benefits program Thursday to support the families of officers who passed away.

During National Police Week, Rep. Ruiz introduced a legislation to strengthen the Public Safety Officers' Benefits program.

This would help ensure benefits and support for families who lost a family member while on duty.

One of the key provisions, which was to fix the benefit determination date, was signed into law.

Rep. Ruiz wanted to introduce these benefits after Palm Springs Police Officers Lesley Zerebny and Gil Vega were killed in the line of duty on October 8, 2016.
