Gastelum enters new chapter ahead of UFC 327 return in Miami
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Kelvin Gastelum is entering a new chapter in his career — and it’s coming at one of the biggest moments of the year for the UFC.
The Yuma native is officially set to return to the octagon at UFC 327 in Miami on April 11, stepping back into the spotlight after months of preparation, change, and uncertainty about when his next fight would come.
Gastelum has been out in Las Vegas since January, fully committing to a new training environment as he prepares for his first fight of 2026.
“I’ve been grinding… just been out here since January,” Gastelum said. “I’ve been getting prepared for a considerable amount of time, just investing a lot of time and making sure I’m ready. Things are going well, and everybody around me is happy with how everything’s coming together.”
That preparation hasn’t just been about physical training — it’s also been about adapting to major changes behind the scenes. Gastelum revealed his longtime Arizona camp underwent a significant shift, including the retirement of his former coach Santino DeFranco, prompting him to make the move to Las Vegas.
With that transition, Gastelum rebuilt his team from the ground up.
He’s now working closely with boxing coach Artem Kuzminov and jiu-jitsu specialist Ronnie Marx, focusing on sharpening multiple areas of his game while getting back to peak form.
“There’s been a lot of changes,” Gastelum said. “So I decided to come out here to Vegas and do my camp here… and it’s been great. I’ve surrounded myself with a really strong team.”
The timing of this fight also comes after a series of delays earlier in the year. Gastelum said he had multiple potential fight dates — including opportunities in February and March — but none ultimately materialized.
That made this upcoming bout even more meaningful.
“After New Year’s, I knew something was coming soon, so I got right back on track,” he said. “We went through several dates… now it’s April in Miami. We’re excited, and we’re ready to go.”
Gastelum is set to face fellow UFC veteran Vicente Luque in a matchup that features two seasoned fighters who have spent years competing at the highest level of the sport.
But unlike many UFC bouts, this one carries a unique dynamic.
Gastelum says Luque is someone he’s built mutual respect with over the years — something that doesn’t always happen in the fight game.
“He’s a guy I really like and really respect,” Gastelum said. “You don’t fight guys like that very often.”
Still, once the cage door closes, it’s strictly business.
“We’ve always been friendly, but we’ve got to put that aside for 15 minutes,” he said. “At the end of the day, we’ve got a job to do. May the best man win.”
Beyond the matchup itself, Gastelum’s return to a major UFC card represents another opportunity to reestablish himself among the division’s top contenders. A former interim title challenger, he’s no stranger to high-profile fights — but this moment feels different.
With a new camp, a fresh mindset, and months of focused preparation, Gastelum believes he’s in the right place at the right time.
“I’ve been putting in the work, and the results are showing,” he said. “Now it’s about going out there and performing.”
As fight night approaches in Miami, one thing is certain — Yuma will once again have a hometown fighter on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
For Gastelum, UFC 327 isn’t just another fight — it’s a chance to prove that this new chapter could be his best yet.
