EAST ELMHURST, N.Y. (NBC, KYMA) - Two pilots were killed and multiple passengers were hurt when a plane crashed into a fire truck at LaGuardia Airport Sunday night.

Crews were still at the scene of the crash Monday morning. It began after Air Canada Flight 8646 touched down with 76 passengers and crew on board.

A fire rescue vehicle responding to another aircraft issue was cleared to cross the runway before it was told to stop, but it was too late.

One air traffic controller was later heard saying, "I messed up."

At the airport, family members of passengers waited and worried, with an NBC affiliate in New York speaking to the mother of one of the passengers.

"She just said, Mom, there was a plane crash. And we're all OK, but there was a plane crash. Please come. And that was basically it. Now, she's in Elmhurst Hospital right now, just getting her stomach checked...her hips hurt, so. But other than that, everybody else is good," the mother expressed.

The FAA, the NTSB and the Port Authority are now investigating the crash.
