Pope Francis laid to rest in Rome’s St. Mary Major Basilica
ROME (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - Pope Francis has been laid to rest in Rome's Saint Mary Major Basilica Saturday.
As part of the burial ritual, Cardinal Kevin Farrell placed a seal on Pope Francis' coffin.
Pope Francis is the first pontiff in more than a century to be buried outside the Vatican.
He broke with tradition, requesting to be buried in an underground tomb at St. Mary Major Basilica, which is home to his favorite icon of the Virgin Mary.
In his will, he asked to be buried "In the Earth, simple, without particular decoration."
The last pope to be buried outside the Vatican was Pope Leo XIII in 1903.
