One officer killed, another injured in New Jersey shooting

NEWARK, N.J. (CBS, KYMA/KECY) - One police officer was killed and a second officer was injured in a shooting in Newark, New Jersey, Friday evening, according to police unions.

Prosecutors said the shooting occurred near Broadway and Carteret Street, according to reports.

The officers were taken to University Hospital in Newark. Governor Phil Murphy visited the hospital Friday night, his office said.

The New Jersey State Policemen's Benevolent Association said a "young officer" had died and another was "fighting for his life" after what it described as "one of the darkest days for New Jersey law enforcement in recent memory."

The New Jersey Fraternal Order of Police (NJFOP) said one of the officers had "made the ultimate sacrifice."

According to ABC7 NY, the suspected shooter was just 14-years-old and had been taken into custody.
