Nine candidates to run for Speaker of the House
WASHINGTON, D.C. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - The race for Speaker of the House continues and there are now nine candidates who have announced plans to run.
House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik announced in a post to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, on Sunday that nine candidates have joined the race for speaker after representative Jim Jordan lost another round of votes last week.
Stefanik noted the deadline to announce a speaker bid was Sunday at noon.
The nine candidates running include Jack Bergman, Byron Donalds, Tom Emmer, Kevin Hern, Mike Johnson, Dan Meuser, Gary Palmer, Austin Scott and Pete Sessions.
The GOP Candidate Forum is set to be held at 6:30pm Eastern Monday, and an internal conference vote will occur at 9:00am on Tuesday.
