Southwest Airlines to reduce flight schedules

PHOENIX, Ariz. (NBC) - After extreme winter weather hit much of the country, Southwest Airlines says it will operate at one-third of its schedule.

This will be for the next several days.

The move is an effort by the airline to reduce the back-log of stranded passengers from the nearly 3,000 canceled flights.

On Monday, the carrier had canceled 2,870 flights, roughly 70% of its schedule for the day.

Thus, dropping to operate one-third of its flights equals roughly 1,500 flights per day.

While other airlines struggled during the winter storm, Southwest had canceled flights ten-times higher than those of Delta.

Flight Attendant Union representatives also cite Southwest's lack of technology upgrades in adding to the holiday travel issues this week.
