Relay for Life of Yuma County event coming soon

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Relay for Life Foundation will host a celebratory lap at Desert Sun Stadium on April 30.

The event starts at noon and will have an opening ceremony at 6pm and a luminaria ceremony at sundown.

After that, the celebratory lap will come soon after.

This celebratory lap is in honor of local cancer survivors and their caregivers.

Not only that, the Relay for Life of Yuma County's mission is to honor, celebrate and raise funds and awareness in an effort to rid the world of cancer.

This is the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic that the Relay for Life will be in-person.

"We are actually so excited to be finally back on the track. Two years ago, with COVID hitting, we had to switch to a virtual Relay for Life and last year, we had a drive-thru luminaria ceremony out of AWC," Miss Desert's Outstanding Teen 2022 and Relay for Life PR spokesperson Ellie Evans explained.

Unfortunately, for those who may not be comfortable attending in person, there is a virtual component.

It's not just the Relay for Life team who is excited to be back hosting events in person, caregivers also share their enthusiasm.

"The last two years, we've been virtual, so it's really exciting. I think everyone needs to get back together. The context of it: Just being together and supporting each other is very important for survivors, for the caregivers, for those that lost people," retired law enforcement officer Melissa Norred shared.
