Affected families seek change in the way missing cases are handled in Nevada

NEVADA (KYMA, KECY/CNN) - Families of missing people are asking for change in the way authorities handle missing cases throughout the state.

The brother of Naomi, a woman that went missing in Nevada, stated that it took 36 hours before detectives began to investigate.

The man also said he felt powerless after speaking to local deputies and began to do his own detective work.

Travis Peters was interviewed in regards to his own family member's case and told journalists his uncle had been dead for 26 hours before his body was discovered.

Peters stated his family filed a report to Police on March 29th, however authorities did not begin searching until four days later.

According to the testimony given by Peters, authorities seemed to be bothered when he called to ask for an update on the case.

Peters stated, “I could clear as day hear in the background the sheriff go 'ahhhh alright I will talk to him'. You know just kinda nonchalant. You know like oh gosh now I have to deal with this guy.”

The NYE County Sherriff's Office released a statement, “Our philosophy is always to get the resources started and get out to that last known area and start the search. We have had so many instances where early deployment has resulted in the ability to find the people quicker. Where we know if we delay and waste time we know there is potential health risks.”
