COVID-19 transmission showing a downward trend in Yuma

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Yuma County Health Department announced that there has been a downward trend in COVID-19 transmissions.

Currently, there have been 62,571 cases and 1,162 deaths in total. However, in a recent update, there are no new cases or deaths have been reported.

With this exciting and prospecting new development in the race to end the pandemic, the Yuma Regional Medical Center decided to close down the COVID unit.

"It feels good that we are over that. I hope we don't have to open that again, at least not for COVID," Dr. Bharat Magu explains.

While he shares Gov. Doug Ducey's outlook on lifting Arizona out of a state of emergency, Magu exercises caution even if we are almost through the pandemic stating, "I think, generally, we still want to be cautious about that. We want to make sure somebody who's sick should follow regular precautions, some distancing, [and] stay home. I think those will still apply."

There have been some record low numbers in the sewage surveillance unit. However, records also show a slight uptick recently, but health officials say that the spike is more of an endemic than a pandemic.

With the COVID-19 transmission numbers decreasing, Magu says that there is a light at the end of a very long and dark tunnel.
