Imperial Valley College and Imperial Valley Girls Softball League host senior showcase

The Senior Showcase brings Imperial Valley softball stars together for one final game

EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA) - Rivalries were put on hold and teammates found themselves on opposite sides of the field as some of the Imperial Valley's top senior softball players gathered for the Senior Showcase Softball Game hosted by Imperial Valley College and the Imperial Valley Girls Softball League.

The event gave graduating seniors one final opportunity to compete alongside, and against, many of the area's best players while celebrating their accomplishments and contributions to local softball.

One of the showcase's most unique features was the way it mixed players from different schools. Longtime rivals shared the same dugout, while high school teammates faced each other in competition.

The game was held at Debbie Pitman Field, a venue with special significance for many of the participants.

For Imperial Valley College softball coach Nikki Cordova, the location helped connect the players' past with their present.

"We decided to do it at the Debbie Pitman Softball Field, which is where the IVGSL Girls Softball League takes place," Cordova said. "We felt that it was a good kind of full-circle moment for some of our seniors who pretty much began playing softball here on these fields where a lot of young girls play now."

Cordova said the showcase allowed players to return to the place where many first developed their love for the sport.

For Imperial High School senior Clarissa Davila, the experience brought back memories of her early softball days.

"It's kind of sad because I used to play in the field all the way back there and then I would play here," Davila said. "I see these little kids playing and I'm like, 'Wow, I used to be this small.' My journey of softball has grown so much."

The Black Team defeated the Red Team 14-7, but the final score was secondary to the event's purpose.

The showcase not only honored the valley's senior players but also gave younger athletes in attendance a chance to see where their own softball journeys could lead.

The event served as both a celebration of the current graduating class and a reminder of the strong community ties that continue to support softball throughout the Imperial Valley.
