CBS 13 Sports: Gastelum in the main event

Cibola grad Kelvin Gastelum fought in the UFC main event in Las Vegas over the weekend

YUMA, Ariz. ( KYMA - KECY-TV ) - 29 year old Cibola High school grad Kelvin Gastelum was once considered one of the best UFC middleweight fighters in the world. In a fill-in role in UFC Las Vegas 24 on Saturday, Gastelum showed he still has a lot left in the tank as a UFC fighter.

Gastelum fought Robert Whittaker on Saturday, Gastelum was replacing Paulo Costa, Whittaker's original opponent, who had to pull out due to lingering effects of COVID-19. Whittaker would defeat Kelvin Gastelum by one-sided unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45) in the main event of UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas. Afterwards, Whittaker, ranked number two in the world as a UFC middleweight fighter, had nothing but praise for Gastelum.

Obviously this was a very hard fight, I think a lot of people were selling Kelvin short because of where he is ranked and he's had a bit of a spill, but I think he's one of the best fighters in the division and that was a tough fight
