NYC offering free abortion pills at sexual health clinics

(CNN, KYMA/KECY) - Paving the way, New York City is now offering free abortion pills at sexual health clinics.

Mayor Eric Adams announced the program Tuesday saying, "We are the first."

The pills are being funded as part of a $1.2 million package for women's reproductive health services.

Free access to abortion pills began at a city-run sexual health clinic in the Bronx on Wednesday and plans are to expand to Queens, Harlem and Brooklyn by the end of the year.

Once the four public health clinics are up and running, they will be able to provide up to 10,000 medically assisted abortions a year.

The services will be made available to anyone in need regardless of whether they are residents of the city.

Since the overturn of Roe V. Wade last summer, the New York City health department has launched several programs to help women access reproductive care.
