Franklin Fire burns nearly 4,000 acres

UPDATE (10:45 AM): According to Los Angeles County officials, the fire had burned nearly 4,000 acres and is less than 10% contained.

"Last night, fire activity increased significantly along the western edge of the fire and began backing down into Coral Canyon, threatening the Malibu RV park community. Structure threats were mitigated in this area and additional structures were damaged. This brings our structured damage count to nine, and our structured destroyed count remains at seven."

"In regards to numbers, updated numbers of evacuations, there are approximately 19,982 people and 7560 structures in the affected area. Of the 7560 structures, there are approximately 12,000 12,600 people that are under evacuation orders. And in regards to the evacuation warnings, we have 7382 folks that are under current evacuation warnings."

The flames are feasting on dry conditions and pushed by strong winds.

MALIBU, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - The Franklin Fire continues to rage on, damaging homes and forcing thousands to evacuate in Malibu.

The fire began late Monday and for a time was burning through an area larger than five football fields.

More 1,500 firefighters are battling the blaze with many roads closed and others under security patrols.

So far, the fast-moving wildfire has scorched over 3,000 acres.

The Franklin Fire is being fanned by fierce Santa Ana winds and has left a trail of destruction as officials confirmed seven structures destroyed and eight damaged.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
