YPD declare teen shooting a homicide

YUMA, Ariz. – Fifteen-year-old Victor Sanchez is dead after being shot off of 17th Avenue in Yuma. Police have declared the shooting a homicide. Sanchez was shot on Saturday and taken to a Phoenix hospital. He was pronounced dead on Wednesday.

“It’s gotta stop somewhere. There’s got to be somebody out there whose willing to give some information,” said Yuma Police Department (YPD) Spokeswoman Lori Franklin.

Police say the shooting was gang related making it the second gang related shooting in Yuma within a month.

“We had two young kids get shot a couple weeks ago and now we’ve got a 15-year-old whose lost his life,” said Franklin.

Franklin is referring to two children who were shot off of James Drive and 24th Street. Both children survived but were in critical condition.

The Yuma Union High School District where Sanchez was a student has declined to comment on his death.

Neighbors say the shots fired Saturday night woke them up.

“I was laying in bed when I heard about two shots because I was sleeping and couldn’t hear much,” said Alberto.

We asked if the neighborhood seemed unsafe to them now.

“No because we’ve never experienced that before,” said Alberto.

The case is still under investigations as YPD continues to search for suspects.

A car wash is set for Saturday, January 16th at the Taco Bell on Fourth Avenue. All of the proceeds from the car wash will go to the Sanchez family for funeral arrangements.
