Woman suspected of stealing $11K from GoFundMe account

IMPERIAL COUNTY, Calif. – A woman was arrested after she allegedly withdrew thousands of dollars from a GoFundMe account set up to help a 3-year-old battle cancer.

Imperial County Sheriff’s Office (ICSO) deputies say, Leah M. Puyot, 33, is suspected of taking $11,500 from the account that was set up to help a family pay for the 3-year-old child’s medical bills.

Deputies say one of the parents was made aware about Puyot taking the money when the child died from cancer in January. The parent reported Puyot to ICSO. During the investigation detectives were able to figure out that Puyot was the sole administrator of the account.

Deputies arrested Puyot Thursday morning. She was charged with grand theft, her bail was set at $5,000.
