CALIPATRIA, Calif. – Two women were arrested at Calipatria State Prison after officials say they allegedly brought marijuana onto prison grounds Sunday.
According to officials with the prison, visitor Britney Lauren Gonzalez and Marcela Sandoval-Kelly came to the prison to visit an inmate when the gate house officer detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from within the vehicle as they were being processed into the institution.
Officials said Gonzalez and Sandoval-Kelly consented to a search. Nothing was found on Gonzalez and Sandoval-Kelly, but staff discovered two containers with suspected marijuana which had a combined weight of 17.6 grams, with a prison value of $4,400 dollars. They also discovered a cigarette.
Both women were booked into Imperial County Jail and are facing felony charges. If convicted both could face three to five years in prison.
