The San Luis Sidewinders football program will not continue starting this fall.
According to the Yuma Sun, the Arizona Interscholastic Association board approved the Yuma Union High School District's request to discontinue the program during their Tuesday night meeting.
The biggest reason for the program's downfall all boils down to athlete's safety because of low turnout of players in recent seasons. News 11 Sports spoke with San Luis Athletic Director Mike Abbas who said that a program at the divison one and two levels needs at least one hundred kids to suit up for varsity, junior varsity and freshman teams in a given season.
With only 18 players slated to come back between the three team levels, Abbas says they can't keep the program going because of these low numbers.
