On May 6th, 2013, Department of Public Safety Officer Tim Huffman was killed in a wreck on Interstate Eight just outside of Yuma.
According to the Arizona Daily Star, Jorge Espinoza, the driver of the empty fuel tanker that crashed into five law enforcement vehicles and killed Huffman, was on his phone using Facebook during the accident.
Although police say Espinoza tried to cover the dashcam inside his truck with his wallet, video taken from the camera during the incident shows the driver’s phone fly out of his hand during the crash.
The investigation revealed he was looking at “photographs of several women in provocative positions, wearing little clothing.”
Police say this was not the first time Espinoza used his phone while on the job.
The Daily Star reports the driver used his phone to surf numerous social media networks, as well as porn and female escort pages, all while logged in as driving.
These new developments could have a significant impact on the state’s case against the 33-year-old.
Espinoza is currently out on bail awaiting his next court appearance.
A trial date has yet to be set.
