If there's a theme to Gila Ridge's preseason camp; it would be "consistency."
After Jay Denton's recent departure from the team for health reasons, longtime friend Tom Hurt steps in as the interim coach for the remainder of the season. Even though Hurt has coached at local schools (like Yuma and Yuma Catholic), his style of play is similar to this predecessor's. Coach Hurt says this allows him to quickly become more familiar with his new team.
"They're just a bunch of hard working kids that have a lot of time, blood, sweat and tears invested in this program. And so, it's really great to be involved with these guys." Gila Ridge will have to make up for some key losses from last year's squad, including a couple of spots on the offensive line. But the Hawks return skilled position players; like fullback and linebacking hybrid Kenoa Renaud and wide recieving threat Dalon Perkins.
According to Coach Hurt, perhaps the highest expectations lie with the team's new field general. "It'll be probably our quarterback, Brandon Kehl that will certainly have a lot to do with how we do on offense."
Even though the Hawks are still adjusting to the recent coaching transition, it doesn't distract them from the goal they have this season. "Our goal is just to win. Our goal is to win and make playoffs."
