Several evacuations were made and fire departments from all across the Desert Southwest came to tame the blaze. News 11 spoke to workers from a furniture store in Calexico who say it was the their store's warehouse that caught fire Thursday evening. They say the warehouse belonged to the Decomart Furniture Store which was used as a storage for their merchandise.
Officials say they reported to the blaze on the corner of Grant Street and Pierce Avenue around 4 p.m.
Needing extra assistance in putting the fire out the Calexico Fire Department called in reinforcements from all over the Desert Southwest including Brawley, El Centro, Rural Metro, and the Yuma Fire Department.
Calexico Fire Chief Pete Mercado says about 60 firefighters were able to put the blaze out in about an hour and a half. He says with a strip mall so close to the burning warehouse many evacuations had to be made. Mercado says at least 50-60 people were evacuated from the strip mall next to the warehouse.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
