Manuel Gonzales made his court appearance in front of a U.S. magistrate judge after being arrested. He was formally charged of enticing a minor.
For nearly five years 28-year-old Manuel Gonzales of Heber has been working as a corrections officer at Calipatria State Prison.
Agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and homeland security investigation arrested gonzales last week of enticement of a minor.
Gonzales is accused of sexual activity with a minor through cell phone text messages.
"Any time a staff member is accused we don’t take it lightly. We take it seriously and whenever it is determined that it is factual it hurts but it doesn’t stop us from keeping the community safe and doing our job," Public Information Officer Jorge Santana said.
Calipatria is one of the largest employers in the Imeprial Valley and potential employees are screened thoroughly.
"We do a fact finding and if it’s a felonious offense, there’s an investigation that is conducted on our side as well as law enforcement on the outside," Santana said.
Santana says Gonzales didn’t have any marks against him as an employee of the prison.
"We’re all human. At this point, they’re accusations. If someone is found to be at fault, to be guilty of a felony, they wouldn’t be employed by the department anymore," Santana said.
