Calexico Police Chief Jim Neujahr’s career spans more than three decades and nearly 20 years of that was spent in Calexico protecting and serving.

"t’s going to be kind of hard to steer my car in the morning and not have it go to the PD," Chief Neujahr said.

Neujahr opted to retire and his last day will be March 5th. One reason he’s retiring is his daughter.

At times it’s kissing her and she’s laying down to go sleep at night. And so I don’t have the opportunity to grow up with her.

Neujahr admits other reasons factored in as well. The Calexico Police Officers’ Association gave him a vote of no confidence last month they say his decisions regarding personnel were questionable.

"Everything I’ve done I’ve done for good reasons for the benefit of the community and I have nothing that I lose sleep over," Neujahr said.

He adds he has no regrets. he says the past few years as chief have been challenging because of the poor economy.

"The men and women of the police department and that goes for the officers, the dispatchers, the clerks everyone has really put their best foot forward to make this thing work," Neujahr said.

He feels good about what he’s accomplished and thanks the community.

"It’s the greatest job in the world they have really opened their arms to me. We’ve dealt with some real issues and I have the utmost respect for the community," Neujahr said.

Chief Neujahr said he’s open to what will happen in the future.
