Imperial, Calif.,- Senior citizens from throughout the Imperial Valley gathered this morning for a special day dedicated to them. The 11th annual Senior Appreciation day took place this morning at the I.V Expo in Imperial.
This year, forty-six county agencies participated in the event by providing information and resources. This event is hosted by the Imperial County Area Agency on Aging along with Catholic Charities.
Every year agency representatives nominate a Volunteer of the Year. Mary Taylor of Salton City was honored the award this year. Taylor has been volunteering for 8 years in the Salton Sea area. Every Tuesday, Taylor provides food for groups of 40 to 60 people in need.
“There’s a lot of people in Salton City that don’t have jobs, money or even a car and they need food.” said Taylor.
State office representatives and County supervisors also honored Taylor, thanking her for her dedication to the community. Organizers say this is an important event because it is a way to show our senior citizen community that we care and appreciate them.
