SAN LUIS, Ariz. – Dozens of bicyclists gathered to be part of the San Luis Police Department’s 4th Annual Family Fun Ride from San Luis to Somerton Saturday morning.
“This is the fourth time we have done it. This is the second time up to Somerton, but we have done it up to Gadeston at least two other times, ” Officer Luis Marquez said.
Marquez says the group rode more than 24 miles starting from the Walmart in San Luis. The group had a half way mark in Somerton at the Parks and Recreation department where the group had a quick lunch. Not only was the event about promoting health, but also getting law enforcement and the residents to talk to each other.
“It’s time to interact with the community and interact with law enforcement and just to promote fitness and promote the bicycle use,” Marquez said.
People from all over Yuma County came to join in on the fun. We asked people what brought them out today to join in on the ride.
“It’s a great program, a great way to get introduced into bicycling if you haven’t been on it for awhile, and it’s all around a good exercise. What Officer Marquez does is fabulous. I think it’s a great thing for the community” Gene Dalbey, President of the Yuma Region Bicycle Coalition said.
Airman Guzman who came out with her Dad and brother says it was also great to spend time with her family, “It’s something I love to do. I woke up got my bike and lets go.”
Guzman says from more to come out again next year or the next event coming up, “You guys should come and enjoy this because this is something really good as a family.”
All levels of cyclists are welcomed to come out. The City of San Luis plans on doing more of these types of events in the future.
“You know encourage more and I know that some people don’t want to come out because I think I am not fast or anything like that, but hey it just takes one ride. But, it just takes one ride and you become a part of the cycling enthusiasm I guess,” said Cynthia Madrueno, who participated in the event.
