NILAND, Calif. – A man is behind bars following a fatal shooting near Niland. The Imperial County Sheriff’s Office said Friday at 8 p.m. deputies received a call in reference to a disturbance and shots being fired in the area of Slabs, near Niland.
The caller reported a disturbance between a man and a woman along with gunfire. ICSO said the caller and several other witnesses approached the couple in an attempt to diffuse the situation. The concerned witnesses reported they were fired upon several times by the man involved in the disturbance.
The man was then observed fleeing the scene in a vehicle. The body of a woman was found at the scene by the witnesses. The woman appeared to have died of gunshot related injuries. Deputies located the fleeing suspect’s vehicle in the vicinity and stopped it. The driver of the vehicle was identified as 40-year-old Clayton Vincent Jones.
Jones was placed under arrest and booked into the Imperial County Jail. Charges were filed on Jones for First Degree Murder, two counts of attempted murder, and being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Bail is set at $1 million.
