Man accused of murder in Slab City faces New Mexico charges

SLAB CITY, Calif. – Slab city residents helped police arrest a man suspected of murdering of woman.

Fourty-year-old Clayton Jones was arrested after Imperial County Sheriff deputies found 39-year-old Shalon Gheen dead.

Not only is Jones suspected of Gheen’s murder, he may also be connected to a death in New Mexico.

A criminal complaint from New Mexico accuses Jones of taking part in the alleged death of Naomi Chaney who disappeared on her 36th birthday this January.

“I guess thinking back on having this guy in essentially my home it is kind of scary to think about,” Vango said.

Authorities say Jones drove Chaney and alleged accomplice Albert Hunsaker to a deserted area. There, he and Hunsaker allegedly killed Chaney. Chaney’s body has not been recovered yet.

Vango and her friend known as ‘Caveman’ remember when Jones and Gheen came to the library they run from their home.

“They were really loud and the guy was obnoxious,” Vango said.

Later outside they tried to stop a fight between Jones and Gheen.

“So immediately when I heard her say don’t hit me again I started – ” Caveman said.

He says he acted out of personal experience.

“I took a lot of abuse when I was growing up so I know how it is to be on the negative end of a really bad situation,” Caveman said.

Vango tried to intervene as well.

“I just can’t stand idly by when something bad is happening to somebody.”

But it was too late. Gheen was on the ground lifeless. Vango says Jones shot several times in their direction.

“There were many shots fired and I’m not sure which one was at her,” Vango said.

Vango called police and Jones was arrested.

“Glad that it was brought to an end,” Vango said.

Jones and Hunsaker are now behind bars facing first degree murder charges.
