Luis Castro is Calexico’s new mayor

CALEXICO, Calif. – City council voted Luis Castro as the new city mayor on Tuesday.

However, some residents, like four-time city mayor Tony Tirado, don’t have confidence in the new leadership.

“It’s the same stagnation that’s been going on for a long, long time. So there’s no change,” Tirado said.

Economic Commissioner Ben Horton said this is not Castro’s first time as mayor.

“He was a mayor previously. He proved himself to a certain point,” Horton said.

Horton said Castro was removed as mayor in 2012 by city council who objected to his style of leadership.

“He was removed for cause previously,” Horton said.

Horton described council meetings under Castro as disorderly.

“The lack of ability of control of the meetings, not having the knowledge,” Horton explained.

Tirado has little confidence in the current council as it is.

“You can change five mayors in the same time and it’s not going to improve,” Tirado said.

Tirado says they lack the needed administrative skills to lead the city.

“You look at the record of Calexico. Look where it’s at. It’s not going up – it’s going down,” Tirado said.

Tirado hopes to see new faces in the council after these coming elections in November.

“There’s an election come in November. We need three new people,” Tirado said.

But council member Armando Real is optimistic.

“We’ve got a new city manager, new mayor, new leadership. I think it’s good. I think it brings another dynamic to the city,” Real said.

Tirado disagrees.

“New blood, new leadership. It has to be,” Tirado concluded.

We contacted Castro but he was not available for comment.
