Imperial County fugitive recaptured in Mexicali

MEXICALI, B.C., Mexico – A man who escaped from the Imperial County Jail last year was recaptured after being on the run for seven months.

Gilbert Acuña was taken into custody in Mexicali Monday night by Mexican authorities, according to Imperial County Sheriff Officials.

Acuña escaped from the minimum security facility at Imperial County jail while working in the laundry room June 12, 2015.

Officials say Acuña was in jail on drug charges and had already been sentenced when he escaped the jail.

Acuña was turned over to U.S. authorities Tuesday morning. He is now being held with no bail.

Deputies say they were able to find the 30-year-old with the help of U.S. Marshals, Homeland Security Investigations, FBI, and Procuraduria General de Justicia del Estado de Baja California.
