One dead in fire on Main in El Centro

EL CENTRO, Calif. – A person is dead after a fire breaks out in the storage area of a local business on Main Street just before 10 a.m.

The person who died is a man according to fire officials.

Witnesses, who called 911, say they noticed flames and smoke coming from the 51/50 store around 9:45 a.m. They also say they heard banging coming from the inside of the building.

El Centro Police Department sent out an alert at 9:51 a.m. advising the public to avoid Main Street between Fifth and Seventh streets for the next several hours due to the fire.

It’s unknown how the fire started.
