April is Distracted Drivers Awareness Month

BRAWLEY, Calif. – Phone in one hand, ticket in the other hand, says El Centro Police if you’re driving and using a cell phone.

April is Distracted Drivers Awareness Month and local authorities say they will be enforcing distracted driving laws.

Nationwide, close to 660,000 persons use cell phones while driving every day, according to trafficsafetymarketing.gov.

Authorities say distracted drivers are 23% more likely to get into an accident.

Some people in the community approve enforcing these laws.

“I think it’s good because a lot of accidents can happen when driving and texting or being on your phone. You could run a stop sign  or you may not see the car in front of you stop and you can crash into it,” said Brawley resident Mia Torres.

Authorities say distracted driving is any activity that takes your attention away from driving – not just using the cell phone.
